- ULM and American Red Cross offer free swimming lessons
A joint community service offered by the Northeast Louisiana Chapter of the American Red Cross and the University of Louisiana at Monroe is helping individuals learn how to swim or improve skills they already possess. Evening classes will continue at the ULM Natatorium each evening this week until conclusion Friday, May 16; sessions begin at 5:30 and at 6:15 p.m. each evening.
The sessions are designed to give students a positive learning experience; help swimmers of various ages (five 18 years old) and abilities develop their swimming and water safety skills; and teach people to swim and to be safe in, on and around the water.
LaVonne LeBlanc, director of administration for the Northeast Louisiana Chapter of the American Red Cross, praises this opportunity to provide life-saving skills. ³This is a much needed service in our area where there are so many waterways lakes, ponds, bayous, and rivers, as well as home pools. The value of this community service and the impact on our community is profound if just one of the 150 participants find themselves in a life-threatening situation in which they use the skills learned here this week.
³The American Red Cross has been the leader in water safety since 1914, and continues that tradition today.²
Instructors are trained and certified by the American Red Cross. Some of the volunteer instructors (Laura Muckleroy, Tom Singletary, Richard Fulton, Dean Tillman, and Mark Snellgrove) have been involved with the program over the past 15 years.
For more information, contact the ULM Lake C. Oxford Natatorium at 318-342-5315 or LeBlanc at 318-323-5141.

- Run For The Wall Memorial Service
The 600 Vietnam Veteran motorcycle reders of The Run For The Wall will conduct a Memorial Service and wreath placing at the Monroe City Hall Veterans Memorials at 8:00 AM Monday, May 19. All are encouraged to come and wave a flag and honor our veterans.

May 19, 2008
- RUN FOR THE WALL 2008
Hundreds of veterans and their supporters will assemble for a special ceremony at the War Memorials on the lawn of Monroe City Hall, at 8 a.m. Monday, May 19, 2008, as they take part in a journey to the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington, D.C. on Memorial Day.
EVENT HISTORY In 1989 Vietnam Veterans James Gregory and Bill Evans began a cross country event they called Run For The Wall to bring awareness about the thousands of veterans who are classified as Prisoners of War or Missing in Action (POW/MIA). The event is also in honor of those Killed In Action from all of our wars. The tradition has continued every May for the past two decades. Motorcycle riders begin a 10 day cross-country ride from California to Washington D.C., arriving in time for Memorial Day Celebrations.
The Sunday before Memorial Day features the Rolling Thunder Parade beginning at the parking lots of the Pentagon through the streets of downtown Washington and ending at the Vietnam Memorial Wall. These groups of bikers make several stops at Memorials, Veteran’s Hospitals and schools as they make their cross-country pilgrimage. This year the City of Monroe is honored to play host to this cause as they stop in our city along the way.
The riders will arrive in Monroe on the evening of May 18th and will depart again May 19th, Monday morning. There will be a brief celebration between 8 a.m.- 9 a.m. outside of City Hall as these riders make their way, via police escort, out of our city and on to their destination. Let’s show our patriotism for our city, country, and the cause by gathering at Monroe City Court. This is a wonderful cause and we should all be showing our support!

- Basket Collections For Women In The Military
ANYSOLDIER: Continuing in 2008, we will have a basket at each of our events to collect items for Louisiana women in the military. Here are items needed: snack foods (crackers, cookies, cereal bars, nutrigrain bars, etc), feminine hygiene products, lotions, non-perishable foods/meals; drink mixes (Crystal light, Kool-aid; GatorAide); phone cards; baby wipes, magazines, books, microwave popcorn, gum, canned chicken, beef jerky, hard candy, sheets, pillowcases, pillows, cotton socks; flipflops to wear to the shower; honey; Blistex; toothbrushes; floss; toothpaste; shampoo; deodorant, playing cards, shower gel.
This sounds like small stuff to each one of us but these care packages have significant positive morale impact for our sisters serving in defense of our country. Sorry, no home-made items are allowed. Remember - easy-open-lids! unscented items! no pork products! no chocolate (it melts)! Bring your items to the meeting!
Our first 2 care packages went to SGT Shanna Rutherford and SPC Amy Wilson. Both are from Louisiana-based companies and are with the US Army in Iraq. Our second 2 care packages went to PFC Courtney Waddell and Julie Korb, who are also from Louisiana-based companies and are with the US Army in Iraq.
